(CHURCHILL, Winston.) A Signed Portrait Photograph.
A Portrait photograph of Winston Churchill, seated in a bergère, half-length, in black formal jacket and bow tie, Signed "Winston S. Churchill" by Churchill on the mount, additionally Signed by the photographer in white ink ("Vivienne/London") on the print, Photographer’s stamp to the reverse, very well preserved strut framed and glazed, overall size is 39*32.5cm, a fine example with just a little toning to the edges of the mount.
The Photograph was gifted by Winston Churchill’s secretary in gratitude for restoration work carried out on the Secretary's clocks by the previous owner who was a Clockmaker.
Taken by his daughter Sarah's mother-in-law, Florence Vivienne Mellish ('Vivienne'), this iconic image was one of Churchill’s favourite photographs of himself. Referred to as 'the Grand Old Lady of the Camera', Vivienne insisted that her sitters, which included seven prime ministers, come to her photography studio instead of her visiting them. The only sitter Vivienne made an exception for was Churchill, who famously only allowed her a ten minute photography session. In this session, Vivienne produced nine studies, this one being utilised for the 1950 election campaign. (National Portrait Gallery).
A rare opportunity to acquire one of Churchill’s most enduring portrait photographs, signed by both the sitter and photographer.
