First Edition, Limited Issue, 1 of 850 copies. Inscribed by the Author. 8vo., frontispiece, original linen-backed decorated paper over boards, top edge gilt, pp. 150. Published by Crosby Gaige (New York), 1928.

Spine gently darkened, a little loss to the spine label. Near fine.

Richard Curle initially became acquainted with Joseph Conrad in the 1910s, and over the next decade they became very close. Following Conrad’s death in 1924, Curle was made the executor of his estate. (Richard Curle by Adam Curle, 1975, The Joseph Conrad Society U.K. Newsletter.)

This copy has notable provenance, having previously been owned by the Author’s friend and noted bibliophile, Holbrook Jackson (1874-1948), with his bookplate present to the front endpaper. Inscribed by the Author to Holbrook Jackson, with the inscription reading:

“Some dovecotes would have been stirred had I printed in this book all the passages I felt it wise to omit. Conrad sometimes wrote frankly about others - a frankness that was not always lacking in irony. But he was the loyalest of friends.”
