Bound in brown morocco by Alpha New York, spines lettered in gilt, covers stamped in blind incorporating Gutenberg's initials, turn-ins ruled in blind, all edges gilt edges, marbled end papers, text printed with lithography; the illuminations by sheet-fed gravure, all printed on rag paper and bound by hand, colour illustrations and rubrication throughout.
Some fading to the top of the rear panel of one Volume, else fine.
Printed by Johannes Gutenberg at Mainz in 1455, the Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed using moveable type. This work is “the first Gutenberg facsimile ever printed in the United States and only the second in the world. The reproduction derives from the Insel Verlag edition [1913-14] which was based on the copy in the Koniglichen Bibliothek in Berlin and the copy in the Standischen Landesbibliothek in Fulda, considered by authorities to be the most beautifully illuminated of the 47 copies known to exist.
