A collection of photographs of the Middle East, compiled in 1943 and 1944, by a British RAF Serviceman.

£450.00

A collection of 94 photographs of the Middle East contained in a single photograph album, compiled in 1943 and 1944. Although the Photographer’s name is not present, he was likely an RAF Serviceman as there are photographs of the same person (presumably the compiler of the album) in RAF uniform, and also photographs of RAF personnel together in uniform. The albums contain photographs of Palestine, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, and Sakkara. The photographs depict military interest, the local landscapes and infrastructure, important local and cultural sites, and offer an insight into civilian life during WWII across the different geographical areas covered.

Oblong folio (33.5*24cm). String-tied leather album with decorative motifs to front panel, the majority of photographs with neat handwritten captions, some photographs protected by tissue guard.

The contents of the album have been well looked after and carefully preserved; near fine. Externally, the album is near fine.

Some of the subject areas covered in the album include: local people engaging in their day to day lives (locals by the Jaffa Gate, homeless people in Jerusalem, people by the Wailing Wall, a local at the entrance to a tomb in Sakkara); local trades (a busy Jerusalem market with traders selling fruit and vegetables, a local extracting dates from a palm tree, locals fishing, locals quarrying Limestone, locals making boats in Alexandria); local and cultural sites (the Pyramids of Giza, momuments at Sakkara, mosques, the Church of all Nations in Jerusalem); infrastructure (citizens on a a busy tram); the landscape (Jerusalem, Helwan in Cairo, boats on the River Nile, the sea front at Sidi Bishr in Alexandria, the Nouza Gardens in Alexandria); military interest (photographs of the compiler of the album and his comrades off duty).
