An extensive collection of photographs of the Middle East across two photograph albums, compiled by Roy Mears between 1942-1946, who was stationed at the RAF Base 107 M.U. Kasfareet in Egypt, during his WWII military service. The albums contain photographs of Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, Ismalia, Suez, Kasfareet, Palestine, Jericho, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Tiberias, Bethlehem, Jaffa, Beirut, and Tunis. The photographs depict RAF activity and military interest, the local landscapes and infrastructure, important local and cultural sites, and offer an insight into civilian life in the Middle East during WWII.

The first album contains 198 photographs and 6 postcards from Roy Mears’ time serving in the Middle East. The second album contains 302 photographs and 10 postcards from his time serving in the Middle East. The remaining 287 photographs in the second album are family and personal photographs from England, mostly from after the war.

Album One: Oblong folio (34*24.5cm), string-tied album with decorative scene of the pyramids to front panel, photographs with neat handwritten captions, the majority of photographs held in by photograph corners, photographs protected with tissue guards, “Overseas Album of R. Mears” written by the compiler to the front pastedown.

Album Two: Oblong folio (30*26cm), cloth album, photographs with neat handwritten captions, the majority of photographs held in by photograph corners, “R. Mears General Snaps” written by the compiler to the front pastedown.

The contents of the albums have been well looked after and carefully preserved with only the occasional very minor blemishes; near fine. Externally, the albums are near fine.

Some of the subject areas covered in the album include: animals and wildlife (Zoological Gardens in Cairo, tigers in Cairo Zoo); the landscape (Sweet-Water Canal in Ismalia, the River Jordan, Dead Sea, the River Nile, Tunis Harbour); local and cultural sites (a Mosque in Ismalia, a Mosque in Cairo, Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem, Russian Church in Jerusalem, Pyramids, locals at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem); infrastructure (railway stations such as Ramleh Station, Cairo Railway Station, a drawbridge in Ismalia, Allenby Bridge in Haifa); military interest (North African Victory parade in Alexandria, RAF Planes, life at the R.A.F base); numerous photographs of Roy Mears and his comrades off duty both at their base and also visiting different parts of the Middle East; members of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force); general life in an Egyptian Village near Ismalia (showing houses on the Canal, camels transporting goods, Bricklayers, locals resting together, a water wheel); local street scenes (in Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Beruit, Arab Market in Cairo, Jaffa Gate and the Gate of St. Stephen in Jerusalem, Beruit, Haifa, Alexandria, Cairo, Suez, and Jerusalem); local trades (fruit shop, junk shop, shoe shining, road repairers, waiter at the Britannia Club in Port Said).
