A unique collection of 71 photographs contained in a single photograph album, compiled by an RAF Serviceman between 1915-1920. (Contains 4 photographs of Winston Churchill’s visit to Cologne in 1919.)

£575.00

The majority of the photographs focus on the RAF Serviceman’s time after the conclusion of the war, where he was attached to 12 Squadron of the RAF, who were stationed in Bickendorf, Germany. A small number of photographs are from the Serviceman’s time in France during WWI, where he was attached to 7 Squadron of the RAF. Although the identity of the compiler of the album is unknown, there are two photographs where he identifies himself in the captions.

Oblong folio (24.5cm*18.5cm). Original string tied photograph album, photographs with neat handwritten captions, all photographs secure in the album.

The contents of the album have been well looked after and carefully preserved; near fine. Externally, the album has some marking and rubbing; very good.

The album commences with four photographs recording Winston Churchill’s visit to Cologne in August 1919, in his role as Secretary of State for War. Churchill held this important government position from 10 January 1919 to 13 February 1921. The Army of the Rhine occupied Cologne until 1926. The local population together with Konrad Adenauer (who later became the West German Chancellor between 1949-1963) respected the British for having administered a humane occupation.

The photographs from the compiler’s time after the war in Germany focus on Cologne, located just 7km away from his station base in Bickendorf. The Cologne photographs feature the landscape, other serviceman the compiler of the album served with, and a lovely aerial photograph of the city.

There are four very poignant photographs, dated 1920, showing the destruction caused to Bailleul in Nothern France. Located just 18km from Ypres, Bailleul was severely damaged from the intense fighting in the area during WWI, and had to be almost entirely rebuilt after the war.

There are a small number of photographs from the compiler’s time serving in France during WWI, for example; a group photograph of members of 7 Squadron together at Warloy-Baillon in December 1916.

Throughout the album, there are various military interest photographs offering an insight into military life, for example; photographs of different aircraft, the RAF Serviceman, the squadron football team, etc.
