(CONRAD, Joseph.) The Dover Patrol.

£375.00

First Edition, Limited First Issue, one of 75 copies. 8vo., Publisher’s printed wrappers, stappled, pp. 14. Printed for private circulation by H. J. Goulden, Limited (Canterbury), 1922.

Some toning to the printed wrappers, the rear cover faded, the staples a little rusted. A very good copy of the rare first issue.

The First Issue was printed without the half-title or title pages; these were added to the second printing at Conrad’s request (Cagle A56a.) This work pays tribute to the Dover Patrol, who protected the coasts of Britain for British troops during WW1. Although "no figure of rhetoric can render justice to the quiet resolution of men making up for the inadequacy of [their] means," Conrad writes a great tribute to the Dover Patrol. (Keating 221; Cagle A56b.)
